About The South Anchorage Farmers Markets
We’re a group of farmers markets serving neighborhoods across Anchorage, each with its own flavor but united by a love for fresh, Alaska-grown food. From produce to handmade goods, our markets are places to shop local, meet your growers, and support small businesses — all while connecting with your community.
Back in 2006, several farmers in the fertile Matanuska Valley were producing bumper crops of vegetables. However, making that produce accessible to Alaskans proved challenging, as corporate grocery stores were reluctant to carry items available for only a few short months each year. One farmer, Arthur Keyes, saw an opportunity to address this issue. He negotiated for a space in South Anchorage and began trucking in beautiful, fresh vegetables to sell directly. Several other farmers soon joined the market.
From the beginning, the South Anchorage Market was intended to be a true farmers market, focused on selling locally grown, edible products. To enhance product diversity, vendors offering ice cream, pasta, baked goods, and crafts—provided they were made in Alaska by Alaskans—were also welcomed.
Over the past 19 years, the market has grown and evolved into a cherished Saturday tradition, rain or shine. A Wednesday market was later added in the Dimond Center parking lot during midsummer. In 2019, a second market opened in Midtown, offering better access for nearby neighborhoods.
These markets offer a unique experience where shoppers can interact directly with the farmers. Children are often curious about how carrots or potatoes grow, while chefs, shoppers, and growers exchange food preparation tips. City dwellers also gain a greater appreciation for agriculture and the seasonal rhythm of crop growth.
Fresh Food, Friendly Faces, and Alaska Grown Goodness
What began as a small Saturday gathering has grown into a beloved Anchorage tradition. Thanks to local growers Arthur Keyes and Ken Hoffman and a passionate community, our markets now span multiple locations, offering the best of Alaska’s harvest and hospitality.
