Why ONIONS?
Onions provide an incredibly powerful and rich source of Quercetin, a powerful antioxidant flavonoid. Quercetin has been shown to thin the blood, lower cholesterol, raise good-type HDL cholesterol, ward off blood clots, fight asthma, chronic bronchitis, hay fever, diabetes, atherosclerosis and infections and is specifically linked to inhibiting human stomach cancer.
On top of all of that, this special antioxidant is known to be an anti-inflammatory. Some research even suggests it has cancer-fighting powers.
Yensis Onions
Alaska’s own sweet onions. Yensis Brand Sweet Onions. Did you know Palmer Alaska is the only place in the world that has wind borne silt loam soil. Over thousands of years the silt from two glaciers ( the Matanuska & the Knik) have combined in the Palmer region to create the very unique growing conditions of low sulfur silt loam soil.
Why do some onions make you cry and some don’t? The answer is Sulfur! It is Sulfur in the soil that goes into the onion as it grows that gives you tears. When the onion is cut, cells break and release Sulfur into the air which combines with moisture in your eye to make the compound sulfuric acid. Who knew?
Our Yensis Onions are a Scottish variety particularly well suited for Alaska’s high latitude growing environment. When this variety grows in our unique wind borne glacial soil, the result is a sweet Onion you can feel good about eating!
